Headlamps are imperative for
Adventure Racing. Choosing a good one will make your race a lot easier. We
have tested out many types of lights and want to help you in choosing the
best. We do not claim to have tested them all but have a good idea of what
you need. The average Adventure Racer needs a light that will last a long
time and can see a long distance. The lights that we have come to use are
called Hybrid lights.
Hybrid Lights give you the best of both worlds. The night piercing
ability to find those elusive checkpoints of a Xenon bulb and the
LEDs for long lasting use. By using both features of these lights
you can extend the use of your light for a longer period. The lights we
have tested below are of the Hybrid class. The extra expense is well worth
it when you are in the black of night and cant find that checkpoint. |

Review:
The
Myo 5 from Petzl is a great light but has its drawbacks. I have been
testing out this light for over a year now. The construction of the
light is great and functional. The problem with the light is once it
gets water in it (it isn't waterproof) the light will not operate
properly and in some cases the LEDs will not turn off. It is not
what we have come to expect from Petzl but none the less the light
is great for other sports, but we wouldn't recommend it for
adventure racing or any sports where water immersion is a
possibility. It weighs 4.43oz without the batteries.

Review:
This
light gives you the best of both worlds. The long lasting light that
LEDs give and the bright Xenon for those needing to see distance.
For Adventure racing this light looks like it could be a winner. The
four LEDs can give you enough light to run with and the mode memory
looks like a good feature. We haven't had the opportunity to test
this one over a long period, but the construction looks sound and
the features are great. The light weighs 6.9oz with batteries.

Review:
This
light is for the person who cant afford the best, but wants a light
that will work when they need it to. The Xenon will work to keep
track of things farther away and the LEDs will give you some
proximity lighting. The two LEDs really don't give you enough light
to run, but can work at a brisk hike. This is a good lightweight
affordable light and can well for adventure racers. We didn't get a
weight for this light.
